The "Big" Town of Cruz Bay

Cruz Bay is the "largest" town on St. John.  I'm unsure how many people live within the actual boundaries of our small town, or if, or even where these boundaries lie but suffice it to say that town is pretty small. We have one gas station.  And don't try to get gas on a Saturday because you and every tourist on island is trying to fill up. We have a plethora of beach bars, restaurants and gift shops, but try to find a pair of underwear on island and you might be looking for a long time. (Or paying $60 for a pair of La Perla.)

Its also the kind of small town that even if you don't know someone's name you still know them by sight as someone that owns this business or always frequents the bakery, or this particular restaurant or beachside bar. You easily see the same faces several times a day if you are running errands. When provided a description of someone you usually know exactly who is being referenced, even if you don't know the name. "You know, that guy who has that brindle dog named Kora.  He used to work at Low Key."  "Oh that guy," you say.

You get the idea.

It's what makes St. John special.

And while you're looking at these pictures thinking, "ah, what paradise." Remember that every place has its pros and cons.  Getting a car registered and insured can become a several day process. Cooking can become a challenge. You've scoured the internet to make this amazing dish, only to find out that you can't find a key ingredient on island, or the price is just atrocious.  You go to just pick up fresh cilantro or a gallon of milk and NO ONE has ANY (this tends to happen primarily during the busy tourist season). These are the little things that over time can drive you bonkers.  So just remember dear friends, the grass is always greener. Though it is a bit warmer on this side of the fence this time of the year. :)

The pros though are the wonderful friends that we have and the great experiences in the ministry.  I'll share more of that later.
