Summer in a Jar

I spent a day last week canning an assortment of items with my friend Astacia.  Canning is like placing summer in a jar to be lovingly remembered and savored all winter long.  I had quite a number of ripe tomatoes when we returned from Yellowstone, so we decided to can a few quarts.  I had grown an assortment of heirloom tomatoes this year, Mountain Princess, Stupice, and Marglobe.  We also ended up canning a couple of quarts of marinara sauce.  I can't wait to try it!

While we were at it we also canned some of my huckleberries I had picked this year.

Huckleberry's are like gold here in Montana.  It takes so many to amount to much that you really relish them.  I can't wait to enjoy them on a hot biscuit this winter!

While we were waiting for lids to pop I took a few pictures of Astacia's oldest son, Bronson.  He has chickens this year and its his responsibility to take care of them and sell the eggs.  He takes it pretty seriously for only being 4 years old.

I think someone was sampling the hucklberry jam.  :)
